Sam was born in Stratford in the East End of London in 1974 and studied Humanities at the University of Greenwich. After several years of working in retail management, she began a course at Kings College London to pursue a career in teaching.
For the last 12 years Sam has worked in secondary schools, teaching and leading projects to support school improvement; rising to the position of Vice-Principal. In 2009 she moved to the city of Portsmouth and quickly fell in love with the city.
Sam can’t remember her life before poetry. The writing is inspired by local events and places, or the experiences that brought her to the city. Sometimes the words will not keep still and have made their way to music, drama, dance, film...
Sam collects antiques and art deco furniture and has been known to walk barefoot in the ocean in December.
In 2012, Sam was awarded the honour of being named Portsmouth Poet Laureate. The salt and air of this amazing waterfront city, the stories, histories, sunsets and people, will always be poetry to her.
