Fashion students at the University of Portsmouth are running a series of events next week promoting sustainable fashion.
The activities are part of Fashion Revolution, an international movement highlighting some of the exploitative and environmentally damaging practices in the fashion industry and challenging the way that clothing is produced, sourced and consumed.
Events are taking place in the University’s Eldon building from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 April and will see students swapping, mending and ‘upcycling’ clothing, encouraging people to give clothes a new lease of life and to ‘swap not shop.’
One of the most anticipated events is a talk by fashion historian, commentator and BBC broadcaster Amber Butchart called ‘My Life In Vintage’ on Friday 27 April. Amber will discuss how wearing vintage and second-hand clothing is a fun and creative way to make better choices about how we express ourselves in what we wear without feeding the demand for the manufacture of new trend-driven mass-produced garments.
The free talk is taking place at 5.30pm in room EW1.11 of the Eldon building and tickets can be booked at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/amber-butchart-my-life-in-vintage-tickets-43353478421
Dr Elaine Igoe, Senior Lecturer in Fashion and Textile Design who is coordinating events, said: “Fashion is a multi-billion pound industry that employs some of the poorest people on the planet and has a massive social and environmental impact. Fashion Revolution is about changing the way the industry operates and changing the way we shop.
Today’s ‘fast fashion’ - getting instant gratification through buying cheap clothes on a regular basis - is feeding that industry. We need to change the way we look at fashion, starting with our students because today’s fashion students are tomorrow’s designers, buyers and industry leaders.”
Other events taking place throughout the week include:
- CLOTHES SWAP – Wednesday 25 April 12 noon - 2pm Eldon Building Foyer with all proceeds to Fashion Revolution.
Bring in your quality unloved or outgrown items of clothing and swap them for something else to love. For each item you bring you can swap for another for FREE. Nothing to swap? You can buy an item for just £1.
All items for the clothes swap must be brought to the Eldon foyer by 11am on 25th April. We would love to have more menswear in our swap.
- TRASHION REMAKE AND PHOTOSHOOT - Thursday 26 April
Students will be deconstructing and reconstructing items unclaimed at the Clothes Swap and making new clothes for themselves to wear and love. They will also be capturing the outcomes of their upcycling in a photoshoot - check out #UoPFashRev for the results.
- FASHION FIRST AID - Friday 27 April all day Eldon Building Foyer
For a small donation two of our final-year students will repair, mend or alter your well-loved clothes so you can keep wearing them. Missing a button, need some trousers taking up, we can do it.
