Gig Buddies is a project based in Fratton that matches volunteers and adults with learning disabilities, who share hobbies and interests, to go out and enjoy a fulfilling social life.
Launched in May 2017, Gig Buddies has been operating under the umbrella of the Aldingbourne Trust and funded by Portsmouth City Council for nearly a year and in that time they have matched over 30 pairs of buddies who have gone on to attend many different social events including Charmed Life festival, theatre trips to London and countless cinema trips.
In addition to individual buddy socials they also arrange group socials that provide all signed up buddies and volunteers, even if they are not yet matched, the opportunity to socialise once a month and meet other buddies.
One of their biggest successes this year has been a Club Night. Hosted by Gig Buddies and MAKE at Aldingbourne Enterprises and with the support of Steve Kingsley of Kingsleys Nightclub, Osborne Road, Gig Buddies were able to bring an exclusive club night for adults with learning disabilities to Portsmouth for the first time. This proved to be a very popular event and will be held every few months throughout 2018. More information about this and other events on the Gig Buddies Portsmouth Facebook page.
Gig Buddies have over 50 adults with learning disabilities waiting to be matched so if you want to do something incredible, sign up for Gig Buddies and share your passions with like minded adults. All volunteers are DBS checked and trained before being matched and are supported locally by the Project Coordinator, with further support available from the team at Stay Up Late in Brighton who began the Gig Buddies project back in 2012.
