Earlier this year, Portsmouth Cultural Trust, the organisation responsible for the management of Portsmouth Guildhall, announced receipt of a £59,000 National Lottery grant for an exciting heritage project, Discovering the Guildhall.
Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project will engage the public to share their memories of the Guildhall and the historic events which surround it, with the project culminating in the production of a digital archive, two short documentary films and a major exhibition.
A wonderful opportunity to volunteer on this exciting project is now open for various roles which will involve oral history interviewers, transcribers and archive researchers, assisting with our exhibition and film making. Full training will allow volunteers to develop their skills whilst enjoying research visits to other museums including the V&A, finding friends and making an important contribution to preserve the Guildhall’s history for future generations.
A drop in session for interested volunteers is being held at Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday 26th November, between 11am and 1pm. Join the team and project partners for tea and cake and find out more about this exciting opportunity and the volunteer roles available. Pre-registering your attendance is advised (so we make sure we have enough cake!) but not essential.
Discovering the Guildhall Project Manager, Nicola Peacock, said, “We are looking for people of all ages, with or without experience in this kind of project work, to join our volunteer team and be a part of this fascinating opportunity. If you have some time you can give please come along to our drop in session or contact me to find out more. I can’t wait to hear and share people’s memories of what is such an iconic and important place in the heart of Portsmouth”.
Portsmouth Cultural Trust aims to transform lives by inspiring, exciting and educating people through music, art, culture and heritage, offering a broad programme of ‘Get Involved’ activities. The Discovering the Guildhall project is an important step for the Trust in being able to tell the story of the Guildhall and developing a team of impassioned volunteers who can bring that to life. It is intended the project will lead to a permanent exhibition, valuing the history and impact of the iconic venue.
