Portsmouth is set to have extra wardens patrolling the city, after funding for eight more was approved.
Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet funded the posts last year to boost the community warden service, a citywide team that help tackle anti-social behaviour and environmental issues.
Community Wardens help keep the city safe, clean and tidy. Examples of work they carry out include providing support and advice to rough sleepers and dealing with fly tipping and waste issues.
The council is funding the additional posts until the end of March 2020 on a trial basis. This doubles the size of the community warden team to 16, supported by two managers.
Following the proven success of the high street warden team in tackling high street issues and the recognised need to cover longer hours, wardens' hours of work have been extended to cover weekdays, 8am - 2am and weekends, 10am - 2am. The team will serve high street areas, and patrol council housing blocks at night in addition to the current duties that they have always carried out across the city.
The additional wardens will help police and support agencies in tackling anti-social behaviour and environmental issues.

People tell me they want more people patrolling our streets. They also know about the pressures the police are under. That is why I am delighted the administration has kept its promise to bring in more wardens. These eight new additions will no doubt help our partners in tackling issues in the city. Councillor Darren Sanders, Cabinet Member for Housing at Portsmouth City Council, said "I am pleased we can expand the community warden team here in the city. People in council homes tell us they want people patrolling their areas, especially at night. I am delighted that the new wardens can do just that."
The wardens have been recently appointed and are currently undergoing training with a planned live date of 1st April 2019.
