Information for health library service web

Libraries in Portsmouth have launched a new service to help customers find up to date and accurate information on a health condition that they, or someone they care for, might have. Called the Information for Health Enquiry Service , it's funded by the Public Health Transformation Fund and is in partnership with Portsmouth Hospitals Trust.

A member of the enquiry team will recommend books and reputable websites that can help people manage and understand their condition. They can also let people know about research that has been conducted on their condition through the partnership with Portsmouth Hospitals Trust which sees them working with librarians at QA Hospital. The service is also working closely with the Community Connectors who can support people to integrate into their local community and find groups and activities that could help improve their wellbeing.

The enquiry team can offer one to one appointments in any Portsmouth Library, or people can turn up to any of the scheduled drop-in sessions:

  • Monday: North End Library, 9.30am - 12.00pm
  • Tuesdays: Central Library, 10.30am - 1.00pm
  • Wednesdays: Paulsgrove Library, 1.30pm - 5.00pm
  • Thursdays: Southsea Library, 1.30pm - 4.00pm
  • Fridays: Alderman Lacey, 9.30am - 12.30pm

The Information for Health Enquiry Service is offered alongside the Wellbeing Zones, which are available in each library. These zones contain books, DVDs and leaflets on topics such as health, mental wellbeing, childcare, lifestyle change, healthy eating and exercise.

Cllr Winnington, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adult Social Care at Portsmouth City Council, said; "This is a fantastic new service for residents. There can be a vast amount of information available on health conditions, and some of it is conflicting, so it's hard to know what to believe. This new service will direct people to reliable, current information so that they're fully informed and best able to manage their condition. The link with the brilliant Community Connectors will also help to empower people to find groups, activities or support in their local community which could help them improve their health and wellbeing.
