From July to September artists Rhiannon Armstrong, Monica Bonomo and Susan Stockwell will create new artwork at the gallery in response to the theme of Exchange and its potential meanings. This will run alongside an exhibition of the artist’s work, encouraging members of the public to exchange skills, knowledge and experiences.
Additional exhibitions, creative events and workshops will be held at the gallery located within Portsmouth’s premium retail centre Gunwharf Quays, as well as locations throughout the city, including Canoe Lake Leisure’s Tennis Pavilion, and Victorious Festival.
Susan Stockwell is an internationally acclaimed artist who has exhibited at the Tate’s Turbine Hall. For Exchange Susan will present Rumpelstiltskin, a new art installation comprising hundreds of meters of cloth feeding through sewing machines, making clothes inspired by fairy tales. During her time in Portsmouth,
Susan will be going into our community and working with local homeless hostels and charities. Inspired by Rumplestiltskin, Susan will be exchanging vital skills in mending and repairing people’s clothing. Susan will also be creating a flotilla of money boats which will appear in surprise locations across Portsmouth.
Rhiannon Armstrong is an award-winning artist with over a decade of experience encouraging people to exchange memories and ideas. Throughout the summer Rhiannon will be working in Portsmouth libraries where she will invite library users to write their own poetry. This work will be added to the library’s special collections and be translated into animations to be shown on digital screens across Portsmouth.
Monica Bonomo utilises the natural colours extracted from plants to create her artwork. Monica will share and exchange her passion through sensory and experimental botanical workshops, taking place at Aspex and throughout Portsmouth.
This is the fourth incarnation of the summer programme, established by the gallery in 2016, now engaging over 40,000 members of the public.
Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex, said: “We are delighted to be working with these inspiring artists. It is our mission to reveal the creative process, enabling audiences to engage with artist’s creative practices - which for Exchange are incredibly diverse.”
Aspex’s summer season takes place 5th July - 22nd September 2019 with a Launch on Thursday 4th July, 18.00hrs.
Exchange has been generously supported by Canoe Lake Leisure, Gunwharf Quays, The Faculty of Creative & Cultural Industries at The University of Portsmouth, The Partnership Foundation and Victorious Festival.
