Port Solent has announced its sponsorship of the newly-formed amateur football team, Sands United FC Solent, which provides a vital support network to local fathers who have lost a baby.
The waterside leisure destination will see its branding on the Sands United FC Solent shirts as part of a deal to provide funds, which will enable dads in the Solent region to seek support from those going through the same experience.
Formed earlier this year by friends Nick Lang and Peter Moseley, the team will officially launch at a dedicated family fun day on Sunday 14 July from 11am until 7pm at Gosport Borough FC where Port Solent will put out a team to play a friendly against Sands United FC Solent.
Tim Keeping, general manager at Port Solent said: “This is a cause that really appealed to us and we’re proud to be supporting such an important network for grieving men in the region. I know this is much bigger than football, but it’s a great way for guys to express themselves in a positive way, and we’re glad to be a part of it.”
The team was formed when Nick and Peter were inspired by the stillbirth and neonatal death charity - Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society), which helped them through some very difficult times in their lives. Through football, they wanted to raise awareness around the subject of baby loss and create a place where fellow dads in the region could connect, be supported and share experiences.
Nick said: “We’re delighted to have the support and trust of Port Solent and we’re truly grateful to have its commitment from the very start of the team. The team has made a huge difference to the dads that take part in the football, but also those that don’t play, but take a lot of comfort from the support they receive from dads who understand.”
Each game Sands United FC Solent plays will be dedicated to one of the team’s babies and each player will have the names of that child embroidered on their football shirts.
