Regulars of a popular Portsmouth Bangladeshi restaurant have rallied together to raise more than a thousand pounds for the Lord Mayor’s charity appeal at a Bollywood fundraiser. The charity dinner, which took place on 9th July at The Akash on Albert Road, Southsea, raised just over £1000.
Pictures were taken beside Portsmouth Football Club’s Checkatrade trophy, dancers entertained the crowds and a raffle brought some excitement to the evening.
Councillor David Fuller, Lord Mayor for the city, expressed his delight after the event saying he is grateful for everyone’s generosity.
He said: “Supporting the local community in Portsmouth is a real honour. The Lord Mayor’s appeal is focused on helping as many local charities as possible. Already we have had an Elvis event, various tea parties, and there’s lots more to come. Events such as this at The Akash make a huge difference.”
The goal of this year’s charity appeal is to assist as many charities around the city as possible - by providing gifts of up to £1,000. At least £50,000 is hoped to be raised between now and next May.
Cllr Fuller added: “We’ve been well looked after by the team at The Akash and it’s great to see the restaurant full of people giving generously.”
An auction which consisted of a PFC mascot experience, a signed football shirt, a cupcake baking experience and an Bangladeshi Cooking workshop all contributed to the overall figure.
The Lord Mayor also threw some Bollywood moves after the performance while being cheered by diners.
Faz Ahmed, who manages the family-owned restaurant with his brother Jaf, says it’s humbling to have hosted another successful fundraiser at their restaurant. The brothers were also awarded with a City of Portsmouth plaque in recognition of their contribution to charity and community work.
He said: “I am truly humbled and grateful for this recognition and would like to thank everyone who has supported me with various community events. The whole team here at The Akash love doing what we do for the local community. If it wasn’t for the supporters we have, none of this would be possible.”
