School children sang for the Lady Mayoress on Friday to celebrate new council owned homes Portsmouth City Council is building in their neighbourhood.

Pupils from Cottage Grove Primary School were the stars of the show at a groundbreaking ceremony for the brand new affordable flats the council is building on the long empty Southsea Community Centre site, in Somerstown, on Friday 19th July.

Polly Honeychurch, head teacher of the school in Chivers Close, said: "We're delighted to be involved in the regeneration of our local area and we're proud to be involved today."

The council hopes that the first residents will move into the 23 x one-and-two-bedroom flats on the site in St Pauls Square next summer.

Cllr Darren Sanders, cabinet member for housing, said: "Having the children from the local school here to sing for us shows what it's all about. It’s important to provide good quality homes Portsmouth people can afford and this is yet more evidence that we are doing that.
One of the most important things we are doing as a council is we are working to provide a mix of homes to meet the varied needs of everybody in this city and that includes people who would otherwise be forced to live in bed and breakfast accommodation.
There is a huge shortage of housing that must be dealt with so sites like this are vital to what we are trying to achieve.
This is not the only site we are bringing forward - in fact we are well advanced with our plans to develop sites across Portsmouth.
We are investing on our land by building new homes. We will continue to do this among the many other measures we are taking to help provide more homes."

The flats are being built by Portsmouth construction firm PMC.

Managing director Steve Cripps said: "PMC Construction has a long term relationship with the council in developing affordable homes for local people.
As a company we've developed affordable homes in Portsmouth for in excess of 30 years and this reaffirms the company ethos."

In addition to this site, the council completed Fred Francis Close in April - 30 x houses and eight x flats it has built on land it owns in Havant.
