The grants for greater wellbeing scheme offered by the D-Day Story is open for round two applications. It’s hoped further local charities and community groups will take advantage of the scheme before it closes on Sunday 21st February.
The initiative offers grants of up to £500 to organisations who operate within Portsmouth (PO1 – PO6) to fund activities and projects which support greater wellbeing for the city’s residents.
The activity proposals must be COVID-19 compliant and have to meet one or more of the following priorities:
- Improving the health and wellbeing of local people
- Community celebrations and bringing people together online
- Sharing the stories of D-Day and Landing Craft Tank 7074
Round one of the scheme saw grants awarded to the Parenting Network’s Baby Bank, Red Sauce Theatre Company and Tonic Music for Mental Health. Projects are now underway which will support the wellbeing of local people.
David Moxey, Fundraising Officer for The Parenting Network said: “We used the grant to buy much needed supplies for the Baby Bank. We improved the health and wellbeing of families in Portsmouth by providing supplies to families who would otherwise not have had the basics needed for a baby’s development. We found the application process straight forward and easy to follow. Thanks to the grant we have been able to make a positive difference to people’s lives.”
The scheme is being delivered as a partnership between The D-Day Story, Portsmouth City Council and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. The grants were made possible due to funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with a total of £5,000 available to be spent by 30 April 2021.
Daniel Jessop, Community Participation Officer at Portsmouth City Council, said: “We’re so pleased that this funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund has enabled us to offer grants that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the local community. We’ve enjoyed hearing how the fantastic projects from round one are providing support to those in need and bringing people together virtually during this challenging time. It’s also fantastic that these projects offer an opportunity for the museum’s stories to be shared when our doors are closed.”
Cllr Steve Pitt, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member of Culture, Leisure and Economic Development at Portsmouth City Council, said: “It’s been really positive to see how the groups awarded funding in round one have been able to use it to boost the wellbeing of Portsmouth residents. I’d encourage any charities or community groups who can do the same to apply for this second and final round.”
The D-Day Story is currently closed in line with government lockdown restrictions. This project is an example of one of the many ways museums continue their work during COVID-19.
