Help Portsmouth’s pupils explore their futures

After a successful pilot run in July this year, Shaping Portsmouth’s Explore Your Future Business Workshop was offered to all senior schools in Portsmouth on Monday 11th September and we are looking for local businesses to get involved.

The aim of these sessions will be to support students in years 7-9 to understand more about the world of work and the local labour market. This will provide an early employer intervention for younger students, to help encourage career conversations and support improved student aspirations.

The role of the business speaker in this session is to provide insight into their organisation and to share their career journey and experiences. This aims to be an aspirational session for young people and help them to find career options that inspire them.

The programme promotes employment in the city and encourages young people to invest back into the city of Portsmouth, and is led by Chloé Bolton, Enterprise & Skills Executive (Careers) at Portsmouth City Council and supported by Kirsty Hill, Shaping Portsmouth’s Education & Community Lead.

Chloe said “I am really excited for the launch of the new Explore Your Future: Business Workshop, as this will provide much-needed employer encounters for students in years 7-9. It is fantastic to see activities that will support in raising aspirations of young people across Portsmouth.”

Kirsty adds “As the new Education and Community Lead with Shaping Portsmouth I am hugely excited to launch this incredible Programme which aims to support young people to understand more about the world of work. This exceptional opportunity allows students to connect with local business and industry experts, discover various work and business prospects, and ultimately kindle inspiration as they contemplate their own futures.”

Shaping Portsmouth’s Director for Education Programmes, Hayden Taylor, said “Shaping Portsmouth is committed to delivering inspiring programmes that enable residents of all ages to explore their future, develop their skills and be connected to Portsmouth’s diverse labour market- the launch of this in-school programme is yet another opportunity for us to live up to that objective. I am confident this programme will be hugely impactful and inspiring for both the young people who take part and the businesses that contribute to it as speakers and mentors.”
