As the Revitalise Victoria Park Project progresses, Victoria Park are now launching their Volunteering programme on a broader scale.
The volunteering programme aims to get as many people as possible involved in the project and support a community within it.
Volunteering opportunities will be offered in as many areas of the project as possible in the hope that they will accommodate a wide range of interests. Volunteering opportunities will also range from weekly volunteer slots to occasional ad hoc opportunities. Victoria Park wants the project to be as accessible as possible, so please do let them know if you see any roles of interest or if there is any way we can help you to get involved.
Below are a few examples of the areas and roles that the park has available.
In the park:
Each Tuesday morning, a volunteer team will be supported by the park gardeners to look after the park throughout the seasons regularly. There will also be occasional opportunities to assist with projects such as tree and habitat surveys and planning the community garden.
Digital:
To help raise the park’s profile and reach a wider group of people, the digital footprint of the park will be growing. Volunteer opportunities are available to help with social media, the website, graphic design and photography.
Heritage:
Historic Research volunteers are welcome to help uncover and record the histories of Victoria Park. Victoria Park are interested in the social history of the park; how local people have used it; clothing & fashion; horticulture; the First World War TB dispensary, the WWII British restaurant, the naval monuments and memorials, and the different perspectives attached to them.
Oral History Recording volunteers will help to record the stories, anecdotes and personal histories of people’s experiences and memories of Victoria Park. The role will include talking to members of the public and recording their experiences of the park, and training can be provided.
Community:
Events volunteering will be an occasional volunteering position to assist as and when events are run in the park. This can include helping with events organisation and set up, stewarding and surveys. The role does not require a regular commitment, and volunteers can help as frequently as they want.
The Friends of Victoria Park group is open to anyone who likes to help shape the park’s future. This is the easiest way to hear about what is happening on the project. Meetings occur once a month, and you can join in person or online. Notes are sent out for anyone who missed a meeting to keep up to date.
If you see something of interest or want further information, please email the volunteer and training coordinator at VictoriaPark@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
