Heritage Open Days are back in Portsmouth for 2022 with a brand-new theme: ‘Astounding Inventions’. This year the festival, which is England’s largest festival of history and culture, will be running from 9 to 18 September and will offer a huge range of activities that are completely free.
Portsmouth City Council and Heritage Open Days are working together with other cultural organisations to offer 52 exclusive events in Portsmouth, hosted by 12 unique venues.
With a wide range of exciting tours and behind-the-scenes opportunities, Heritage Open Days sees cultural institutions throw open their doors for free events where the public can get up close with the heritage on their doorstep.
Cllr Steve Pitt, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Economic Development at Portsmouth City Council, said: “We are proud to offer a remarkable programme of events for Heritage Open Days. It’s important for us that residents and visitors to the city have the chance to explore Portsmouth and see our rich and diverse cultural heritage.
“The programme on offer is varied and exciting, and I hope that many people will get involved and support it so we can continue to deliver these events.”
Residents are reminded to book their places quickly as many of the events have limited spaces. Please also remember to walk, cycle, scoot or use public transport wherever possible.
Every year, thousands of volunteers and supporters organise events that allow the public to discover hidden places and try out new experiences. Heritage Open Days is presented by the National Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.
Every single Heritage Open Days event is free, including access to many sites that usually charge for admission. For details and opening times, visit https://www.visitportsmouth.co.uk/featured-pages/heritage-open-days
