Highbury College Students Supported with Remote Technology

Highbury College launched its Digital Device scheme this week – supporting students and apprentices who do not have access to IT at home.

The College purchased more than 200 remote-ready laptops for students and apprentices to use alongside their practical lessons in all areas of the College, from automotive to art and catering to construction.

Students from across the three Portsmouth campuses are set to benefit from the new technology, which includes an integrated webcam, microphone and the full Microsoft Office 365 suite of software.

16-year-old Level 2 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care student Skye Quilter said: “It’s exciting. This laptop is very helpful because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do my course as well as I would’ve wanted to.”

Students that are without wifi at home are also able to safely work through the College’s enhanced open access wifi areas.

Merson Ruck, a Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Networking) student, 17, said: “I think it’s amazing because it’s helping people who don’t have access to IT at home. I think it’s a really good idea.”

It’s also vital that students develop their digital skills for the workplace or next stage of education. This is just one of the ways we are enabling our students to continue learning safely despite the difficulties that COVID-19 presents.”
