Shaping Portsmouth will be launching our latest programme next week in partnership with Portsmouth Youth Cabinet, which will be focused on Youth Employment in the city.
Portsmouth Youth Cabinet’s consultations with local young people revealed that 91% have never been in paid employment and that 67% have wanted a job, but were unable to get one. They want to work, develop skills, and earn money, but the opportunities for them to do so are few and far between.
The programme aims to remove barriers to businesses employing young people by providing reliable information about the rules and processes required, and providing a space where young people can submit their key skills, interests, and availability to create a registry for businesses to recruit from.
Dave Humphries, CEO of Shaping Portsmouth, said “For many of us, the jobs we did as teenagers played an important part in introducing us to working life. Young people in the city have told us that they want to work, develop skills, and earn money. However, there are now very few opportunities for them to do so. We want to work with businesses and help create the opportunities that were so important for us.”
Quinn Wylie from the Portsmouth Youth Cabinet said “We want to thank everyone who has helped us on the progress of this programme, particularly the whole team at Shaping. This has potential to be a real game-changer but we need all of you, the partners of Shaping and the business leaders of Portsmouth, to make this a success.”
