We’re looking for volunteer mentors to join the Portsmouth Business Support Service (PBSS) programme.

Why become a mentor?

The impact of mentoring on business success is proven:

  • Businesses with mentors are three times more likely to experience high growth.
  • Small business owners with mentors are five times more likely to start a business,
  • Mentored businesses are 20% more likely to thrive in their first five years

Beyond the statistics, you’ll make a tangible impact on Portsmouth’s economy while building meaningful connections.

What we offer

The PBSS programme, led by Portsmouth City Council and Shaping Portsmouth with support from key partners, provides a structured, supportive framework for mentoring. We’ll match you with businesses that align with your expertise and provide ongoing support throughout your mentoring journey.

Who can apply?

We’re looking for business professionals with experience in areas such as:

  • Business planning and strategy
  • Finance and funding
  • Digital marketing and social media
  • Operations and growth management
  • Sales and business development
  • Human resources and people management

Whatever your sector or specialism, if you have practical business experience and a passion for supporting others, we’d love to hear from you.

The time commitment:

We ask mentors to commit 6 hours per business they’re matched with. This can be spread flexibly, whether that’s monthly meetings, ad-hoc calls, or a combination that works for both you and the business owner. You’re in control of how you structure your time.

How it works:

  1. Complete the registration form – Tell us about your experience and areas of expertise
  2. Attend an onboarding session – Join one of our sessions in January or February where we’ll introduce you to the PBSS process, mentoring best practices, and ongoing support available
  3. Get matched – We’ll connect you with a business that needs your specific skills
  4. Start mentoring – Commit 6 hours to help a local business grow and succeed

Your time and knowledge can help shape the future of Portsmouth’s business community. Join a network of like-minded professionals committed to making our city’s economy stronger.
