Four students from the Creative Industries Faculty at Fareham College have been selected in a national competition for exhibition at the Origins Creatives showcase in London.
Charlie Moss, Level 3 Photography, Sophie Wood, Level 3 Fashion and Clothing, and Toniesha Moss, Level 3 Graphic Design, along with Level 3 Creative Media Production student Rio Bardouille were all selected by the UAL’s Awarding Body Curators among nearly 500 submissions.
Charlie Moss produced a fresco-style piece drawing on intense colour, shapes, patterns and code to explore the ideas of artificial and human intelligence and the evolution of such concepts from sci-fi fiction to real-world technology; begging the question: Can machines replace humans, and who cares?
Sophie Wood drew inspiration from the cinematic classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’ alongside Yayoi Kusama’s use of dots to explore fabric texture creating a unique dress. Their design incorporates heavy contrast depicting the yellow brick road, and printed lines across the top, including the famous ‘There’s no place like home’.
Toniesha Moss decided to explore the innate complexity of mental health in their piece titled, ‘The Journey to Recovery’. They produced a series of informative posters intended to act as a guide to support individuals through their unique mental health journey.
Rio Bardouille produced an animated short film, KIN, depicting the story of a bounty, Slade, and the discovery of his tragic past. Having loved drawing from a young age, Rio has been practising and producing animation for a few years, drawing inspiration from ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ for the character design and ‘Star Wars’ for the anthropomorphic world in his most recent piece.
Curriculum Area Manager Greg Kitchen, speaking on Rio’s work, added, “Rio has applied highly professional animation techniques that have resulted in a well-paced, intriguing and entertaining end product. Being able to produce such a level of content at such a young age suggests Rio is going to go on to a very successful future in the animation industry.”
Russell Squires, Graphic Design and Photography lecturer at Fareham College, said, “We are incredibly proud that the hard work and dedication our students have shown this year have been recognised by UAL to be featured in the Origins Creatives show at the Truman Brewery. To have four of our students selected is amazing, we wish them well in their success and futures.”
Origins Creatives is organised by UAL Awarding Body and provides art lovers, critics and industry professionals from the creative sector the chance to discover original creative talent from across the UK and celebrate students’ creativity and hard work.
This year, Origins Creatives will be an in-person exhibition at The Truman Brewery in Shoreditch. The exhibition will open with an invite-only private view on 21 July at 6pm. It will be open to the public and free to enter from 22 – 24 July, alongside an online showcase.
