The Southsea Coastal Scheme is the UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defences’ project, worth more than £100M. It will stretch for 4.5km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney.
The old coastal defences do not offer a sufficient level of protection and are at the end of their serviceable life, leaving 8,077 homes and 704 commercial properties in Southsea at risk from coastal flooding. We are building new coastal defences that reduce the risk of a major flood event now and for the next 100 years.
The Southsea Coastal Scheme is being delivered by what is known as an ‘Integrated Delivery Team’. It is comprised of experts from a range of different fields and organisations, all working together as one team. We are all passionate about Southsea seafront and want to protect and enhance its unique character.
Shaping Portsmouth were delighted to have the Southsea Coastal Scheme join the Explore Your Future programme. This aims to inspire Portsmouth’s young people through the real-life experiences of a diverse pool of role models. We were able to showcase a wide range of roles from Engineering to Project Management to Customer Service.
Lee Butler, Joint Programme Lead, Shaping Portsmouth says, “Having such a prestigious local project involved in Explore Your Future provides a wonderful opportunity to hear inspiring career stories that are readily accessible to local young people”.
Jeannette Moyse, Customer Engagement Officer, Southsea Coastal Scheme says “Community engagement is a vital part of our work, and we welcomed the opportunity to share our stories to inspire the next generation. I would encourage local businesses to get involved”.
