Society of St James premieres I Am Only Human at the Recovery Film Festival

Don’t miss the powerful “I Am Only Human” film premiere at Guildhall Portsmouth (Lens Studio) on Wednesday, November 13th at 5:00 PM! Witness inspiring stories of recovery and celebrate the filmmakers’ achievements. The 6th annual Recovery Festival continues at Southsea Community Cinema through to 16th November and features the inspiring work of individuals in recovery who have learned the art of filmmaking and shared their personal journeys.

The Society of St James aim is to end homelessness, person by person. The Society of St James walks alongside people to navigate a system that should be accessible to everyone. They have a variety of different services across Hampshire, providing someone with accommodation is not enough to end homelessness and that is why at The Society of St James they provide wrap-around support to people when they are in accommodation to teach people independence and stop people from becoming homeless again.

The Portsmouth Film society, Southsea Cinema, is a multi-purposed: theatre space, classroom, Gallery, and small Cafe. They run quiz nights, complimentary social programmes, Q&A sessions, talks, workshops, have regular film showings and once a year facilitate a 10 week “I’m only human” Introduction to film course, as a part of the Recovery Film Festival.

The Portsmouth Film Society has announced its full programme, featuring a diverse range of events, workshops, film premieres, and celebrations. The festival, which runs from 13th to 16th November 2024, showcases the power of creativity and community in the recovery journey.

The Society of St James will be featured across the festival with pop up workshop spaces at the film premiere in the Guildhall on 13th and in the Southsea Cinema for the rest of the festival.

The “I Am Only Human” introduction to film course is where individuals in recovery learn the art of filmmaking to share their stories. This year they had a trip to the renowned Pinewood Studios in London, offering participants a unique opportunity to connect with the film industry.

The Film will be premiered as a part of a 4 day film festival. The premiere is the end product of a 10 week film course where students have learned every single aspect of filming and have been able to showcase some of their real life stories.

Lucy Potts, Fundraising Officer Society of St James, said “It has been amazing to have been part of this experience watching the students’ confidence grow throughout the course, it has been a rollercoaster of emotions, everyone has worked so hard and we are all really looking forward to the premiere.”

On 14th, 15th and 16th November Society of St James will have a pop up station at the Southsea Cinema 1-3 Palmerston Rd, Southsea, Portsmouth, Southsea PO5 3QQ please come down and meet with them to see what the Society of St James do.
