Shaping Portsmouth is pleased to welcome The Mary Rose as our new Patron.
The Mary Rose museum is an award-winning exhibition housing and caring for Henry VIII’s ship and thousands of objects found within. This month also sees the 40th anniversary of the hull of the Mary Rose being raised from the bed of the Solent in 1982.
Dominic Jones, Chief Executive Officer at The Mary Rose, said, “The Mary Rose was and always will be Portsmouth’s, Mary Rose. She was built in Portsmouth, crewed by people from Portsmouth, and sailed from Portsmouth on that fateful day in 1545; she sank, protecting Portsmouth from an invasion fleet twice the size of the Spanish Armada. Divers from Portsmouth rediscovered her and brought her to the surface, allowing her to take her place as one of the jewels of Portsmouth’s naval history.
“We are proud to be Portsmouth’s Mary Rose. We support the city through various community engagement and projects from Learning & Education to Theatre & Arts groups as well as providing employment, volunteering opportunities and events for everyone in Portsmouth.”
Stef Nienaltowski, Chief Executive Officer of Shaping Portsmouth, said, “One of the city’s main brands and one of the world’s most iconic museums, the Mary Rose is the latest Portsmouth organisation to join us as a Patron. In working with Dominic over the past few months it became so obvious as to the way our two organisations share the same values and objectives for the city. So it is with a great amount of pride and excitement that I welcome the Mary Rose organisation into the Shaping family. Thank you, Dominic, for showing your belief in our vision and objectives. “
